"Intrepid and possessed, "From the Book of Remembrance" is the gorgeous, penetrating music of a wild and battered heart, mended and reassembled into a lush spell of paradise reclaimed. Karla Van Vliet once again reminds us of the great vessel of feeling, amplified to song, which is the work of great art. Laid-bare, awakened by the seasonal turns of the body’s furious abandon, her work is the work of mystical attainment. As always when encountering the woman, I invite you to marvel at her incredible and original gifts." "Karla Van Vliet’s poems carry a faith like a torch of fury lighting up any darkness and filling it with a kind of truth. In this book of her poems and paintings, Van Vliet enacts a spirituality that exists within “the deep heart’s core,” to quote Yeats, but also in the intimate and natural spaces of the world. Pound said poetry is “news that stays news,” and each of the prose poems in this collection is a post from the other world that is inside this one, revealing our lives. Each poem is a petal in the great Beloved’s flower blossoming. There is a quiet knowing here that I trust, a quiet ripple of the natural world taking its shape and letting it go." |
