Over a span of more than a decade, poet and photographer Sheree K. Nielsen, her husband, and their fur babies have visited Sunset Beach, on the coast of North Carolina, many times. They have experienced the chilly air of March, the sun-kissed month of May, the salty sea sprays of September, and the Halloween-hued sunsets of October. There Nielsen has found comfort and solace while walking the beach. In honor of all the hard times—and definitely the good—she dances on the beach, especially at sunset on the night before they head home. Let Sunset Beach Dances, its poetry and photography, transport you back to your favorite beach, no matter where you are, no matter your worries—and, by all means, dance.

“This collection slides you into all that is the seashore. Only a few poems into the book, my senses took hold of salty memories so vivid, so lyrical, so sensual with depth. Sheree K. Nielsen’s love affair with the ocean swims through these pages, inviting the reader to come share with her what God has so profoundly gifted us . . . that we often forget. Nobody can visit the coast and not fall into a romantic trance, and the poet has gifted us with a chance to do so when we aren’t there to get our feet wet. I love this collection!”
C. Hope Clark, author of the awarding-winning Edisto Island Mysteries series, and South Carolina coastal enthusiast

“In Sheree K. Nielsen’s new collection, Sunset Beach Dances: The Infinite Rhythms of a North Carolina Seashore, the poet announces almost immediately that ‘My heart lies with the sea.’ Yet these poems are anything but still. Waves may rest in the body’s museum for sentiment and memory, but the lines in the collection gather witness for the dance of bodies—some in sand, many in captured wonder after a day near water and its mysteries. Nielsen is a writer whose gift is to hold up a mirror for her readers so they might remember, long for, and pause intently in the recognition that they, too, have given something of their precious Self to the wildness of surf and tide.”
Kelli Allen, author of Leaving the Skin on the Bear

“Sheree Nielsen is a beach-lover, but more than that, she is on a quest to find herself on a beach—like so many of us. She walks with her dogs to find her soul. She has a longing to run and find her wild. She wanders and meanders, even knowing that her time is limited. ‘We are all just visitors on temporary vacation doing the best we can.’ Yes, and we all are searching for a way home to ourselves. Her poems are satisfying, the same way the waves soothe us but leave us aching for more.”
Sandy Gingras, author of Paradise Girls, and many gift books including Walks on the Beach and Lessons of a Turtle
