Doorway to the Temple is about a journey taken to explore the sacred places of Brittany, a culturally and historically rich region in northwestern France. It is also a journey taken to try to answer the questions that come from within, the calling we all feel to leave one place for another. Most importantly, photographer Ralph Hassenpflug uses his magnificant, dreamlike images to tell the story of his personal journey inward to explore connections, symbols, and mysteries leading to the discovery of our innate capacity for the sacred. Writer and multimedia artist Kathryn Oliver uses her brilliant sensibilities regarding text and image to enhance the story of the journey. Doorway to the Temple is visual poetry. Its remarkable images will lead readers along their own journey of exploration and discovery of the sacred.

Author Biography

Ralph Hassenpflug was born in West Germany during the years of the Cold War. He studied French and German literature at the Université François Rabelais in Tours, France, and the Johann Wolfgang Goethe Universitaet in Frankfurt, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 2002 and settled on the coast of Maine from where he travels extensively. Hassenpflug studied photography at the International Center of Photography in New York City and Maine Media Workshops in Rockport, Maine. Hassenpflug has exhibited his work in many places around the United States, including the Center for Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado, Minneapolis Photo Center, Photo Place Gallery in Vermont, and Kiernan Gallery in Virginia. His work has been published in Maine Art Scene and Stone Voices.

As a small child, Kathryn Oliver made pictures and told stories to strengthen and stabilize her emotionally turbulent and fragile world. Introverted and shy, she was often alone with her imagination and developed a rich inner life of impressions. As she grew, creative aspirations led her to bring this inner world forward through art. Driven to discover the sacred in her life, her journey has repeatedly taken her into elemental and mythic realms. With a background in painting, sculpture, theater, playwriting, and dance, she currently creates and exhibits photo encaustics, blending hints of all these elements into her images. Oliver’s work has been selected for Curious Camera, an international pinhole and plastic camera competition sponsored by ArtsEye Gallery in Tucson, Arizona. She has also exhibited her work several times at The Center For Fine Art Photography in Fort Collins, Colorado. She teaches workshops on photo encaustics and lives in the midcoast area of Maine.

"For Ralph Hassenpflug, photography is a mode of spiritual practice, a means of meditation. These images seem to come from early experiments in the medium, a camera in the hands of a wild and passionate seeker. What Ralph discovers is layer after layer of his ancient being. "
— Zenshin Tim Buckley, Soto Zen priest

"A boat out of water weighs a ton; afloat it weighs nothing. For a stone to weigh nothing it must float in the mind."
— Arno Rafael Minkkinen, Internationally recognized photographer and teacher
