Inspired by the life and career of Nikola Tesla, Nikola's Dove speaks of the life, career, visionary contributions, and personal struggles of the engineering giant who is responsible for the design of the modern electricity supply system. The first part of this fine collection highlights Nikola Tesla's young life and his relationship with his family, and the second part looks at his early experiences as an inventor and the ensuing struggles getting his work and vision accepted. Part three looks at his middle-age years and his move toward isolation and loneliness. Part four presents the demise of Nikola against the background of having his immensely innovative intellectual property pirated. Throughout the story of Tesla, the poet, Tracy Ross, compares aand contrasts her own experiences with solitude, mental illness, and with those of Nikola Tesla, including vignettes of my life in the city, in the Minnesota nature of the Boundary Waters area, and the rural MN Southwest.

“Nikola Tesla haunts the pages of this compelling book like a patron saint of genius and ‘the unsung.’ The poems relate loneliness despite being surrounded by screens, feeling lost despite a GPS in one’s hand, frustrations with corporations and capitalism, and despair over environmental degradation. Through all, there is hope. There is light. There are wings.”
Janna Knittel, award-winning author of Real Work (Nodin Press, 2022), finalist for the 2023 Minnesota Book Award
